As the years have advanced, new inventions have allowed such presses to be much more sophisticated with automated feed lines and computerized controls, allowing straight-side presses to be highly productive stamping out and cutting out products and product components from sheet metal and lightweight metal plate. In recent years, plastics have replaced the use of sheet metal in producing many things but despite this fact, many things manufactured today are still made from sheet metal and continuing the demand for straight-side stamping presses.
Where Straight Side Stamping Presses are Used
Straight-side presses are occasionally seen in the common local machine shop but are normally found stamping out parts in manufacturing plants that make products made from sheet metal. Products such as auto parts products, appliance components and military items often use straight-side stamping presses. These presses are used all over the world, not just here in the United States; especially in places like Japan, India and China. Straight-side presses are the strongest form of stamping presses and are therefore used to stamp out or cut out metal workpieces from heavier gauge sheet metals and/or where multiple workpieces are all at once stamped, at the same time.

Straight Side Stamping Press Sizes
The size of straight presses are expressed as tonnage and bed size. For example, a typical size would be expressed as – 400 Ton 48 X 96 Bed.
Within the used market, tonnage ranges from 60 to 1500 tons, although much larger tonnages do appear.
Bed sizes on the used market generally range from 36 X 24 up to 144 X 72.
How Straight Side Stamping Presses Operate
Working on a straight-side stamping press can be done piece-by-piece or on a continuous basis via an automated feed line. Each component of the press has a specialized job that is important to understand.
- Feed Line – This feed system is responsible for feeding the sheet metal into the press. It consists of a coil reel, a feeder/straightener, and a scrap chopper.
- Tool and Die Sets – These are critical in allowing the press to cut or stamp out parts as the male type tool and are attached to a t-slotted ram. This then travels down to compress the sheet metal into the female die, which is attached to the t-slotted bolster below.
- Ram – This is attached to connecting rods that are secured to an overhead crankshaft, making the ram assembly move up and down to stamp out or cut out workpieces.
Most present-day presses are of variable speed, allowing the operator to use the most appropriate speed for the job.
