History of Vertical Boring Mills
Vertical boring mills have a somewhat vague or even mysterious history and background. There doesn’t seem to be a definite date when a vertical boring mill first came into being. The Bullard Machine Tool Co. was founded in 1894 and sometime thereafter, the company was believed to have created a vertical “boring machine.” They later added a turret to their vertical boring machines, making them “vertical turret lathes” or VTLs as they are called today. In time, other machine tool manufacturers began developing their own machines. Thus, there are numerous brands of vertical boring mills or VTLs.
Vertical Boring Mill Usages
Vertical boring mills or vertical turret lathes are not seen in as many machine shops nor in manufacturing plants as are horizontal boring mills. However, there is a sizeable population of them out there. Depending on what type of machining they specialize in, you’ll find vertical boring mills in facilities ranging from the very smallest to the largest. A lot of VTLs are in use in the oil industry. They are also widely used in repair work, especially of construction, mining and military type of equipment. When parts or components needing to be turned are too large or too heavy for horizontal engine lathes, the answer is normally a vertical boring mill or vertical turret lathe.
Brands of Vertical Boring Mills
There are several brands of vertical boring mill/vertical turret lathes. Bullard Cutmasters are the most popular vertical boring mills or VTLs on the market. Machinists like their simplicity and ruggedness and also their ease of operation. However, there are several other very good brands of vertical boring mills like King, Webster and Bennett, Giddings & Lewis, Cincinnati-Gilbert, Niles, Shibaura, Schiess, Toshiba, Betts and others. All brands have their own advantages and disadvantages of course. For example, if you need low-profile machines, a Webster & Bennett might be a good choice. They are usually more low profile than other brands of the same size chuck. If you need a large vertical boring mill with ram heads, King is usually the pick. If you need higher table RPMs, a late model Giddings & Lewis is usually a good bet. Thus, many brands of vertical boring mills.
Vertical Boring Mill Sizes
Vertical boring mill/VTL size is determined by the diameter of its table or chuck. Sizes range from two feet up to as much as fifty feet. In choosing the size machine to buy, you need to consider how the parts to be turned, need to be chucked. If you are about to turn a part or object that is sixty inches in diameter, you might want a seventy-two inch or larger machine if you plan on chucking the object on the O.D. or outside. However, you might get away with turning some object that is larger in diameter than the table if you can chuck it on the inside (I.D.) because most all vertical boring mills are capable of swinging objects a few inches larger than the table. The overall height of vertical boring mills and turret lathes is determined by how much vertical space is built in between the table or chuck and the cross rail or tool head. Use caution in choosing which size vertical boring mill or VTL.
